Today was a fun day at ye olde Seventh Level Of Hell™! A number of middle school students decided to 'protest' the whole immigration reform issue. It's being called a 'walkout', but since several sources have indicated that the students never went to school, but met at a local park to begin their day, it wasn't exactly a 'walkout'. No, these kids skipped school to protest.
The best part was listening to a guy on the radio talking about asking the kids what they were marching for. Their answers: Immigration reform and amnesty. When asked what that meant however, they couldn't really explain it. Hmmm... guess you should've spent your morning in school learning what those terms mean dumb asses.
Aside from the trampling and destruction of two American flags, I haven't heard anything about it being a violent protest in any way shape or form. Which is good. The people on the radio calling in were pissed off about traffic being obstructed and the lack of enforcement of truancy laws. I can see that... I really can.
The flag desecration kinda pissed me off, but I've seen our flag destroyed so many times I'm numb to it. Watching parents drop their kids off to run and join the march kinda pissed me off... way to advocate your children turning their backs on an education provided to them by our American system.
But I think the one thing that set me off, on top of those others, was the punk kid I heard yelling, "Mexican pride! If you don't like Mexicans, you can kiss our asses!" or something to that effect.
Now... I've been going back and forth in my head about the whole immigration reform thing that's been getting people pissed off. After reading this post yesterday, I started to feel for the immigrants myself. I read what Rob had to say and agree with his ideas on dealing with immigration. But after the bullshit this morning, I say fuck 'em. If they're here illegally, send 'em home.
They don't want to be citizens of the United States. They want to be citizens of Mexico while living in the United States and taking advantage of all we have to offer.

I know that some students here in the Los Angeles area that were caught were issued a minimum $250 citation. Word got out really fast, and there hasn't been a peep about walking out since.

Now there's a good idea. I wish my local police force would've issued citations. From what I heard from various sources, our police were overwhelmed and didn't know what to do.
I hope they can figure out what to do the next time someone commits a more serious crime.

My brother knows a top-notch surgeon from India. The INS took SIX YEARS to process her application for US citizenship, even though she was working in Baylor Hospital at the time, making a ton of money.
THAT is ridiculous.

I agree... that is ridiculous. I think any immigration reform should include a streamlined, no bullshit process for becoming a citizen. If the process is less of a nightmare, maybe more people will be inclined to actually go through it and become citizens.

Well, we had over 150,000 immigrants/protestors 'demonstrate' at the capital building here in Phoenix on Monday... Nothing really happened, no one really cared... and it was ridiculous because of the traffic - but no one got citations... They practically got a free pass to downtown Phoenix!!
I say, just build the damn wall... force them to take care of this crap before they even get into our country. They wanna break our laws - just to be free? Screw that...they can go kick Rio Grande Rocks..
Whew! I feel better!!
