Let me start by saying that I love kids. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that I still am a kid… a 27-year-old kid, but a kid nonetheless. The fresh innocence of children is a happy reminder of my younger days when I would spend my summers playing baseball, riding my bike, exploring the creek by my house, and most importantly, getting into trouble. I was never held back by a serious illness – the most I ever suffered from was a touch of the flu.
Some kids are not that lucky. Some kids have to deal with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. They spend large amounts of time in a hospital, hoping to feel better and be able to run around and enjoy being a kid. What could be worse than being a kid and stuck in a hospital with nothing to do?
Enter Child’s Play. Child’s Play was started by Penny Arcade in 2003, in response to the media portrayal of gamers as ‘bad people’.
What is Child's Play?
For the past three years, gamers and geeks around the world have raised nearly a million dollars in toys, games and cash for sick kids in Children's Hospitals across the globe through a grassroots charity called Child's Play.
Created by Penny Arcade, no "Administrative Fees" or other nonsense is collected; all gifts and donations go directly to the hospitals for distribution to sick kids.

As I said before, I love kids. The thought of kids having to suffer through having a disease like cancer breaks my heart. I’ve always wished I could do something and now I will.
Starting today and continuing through Christmas, I’m collecting donations for Child’s Play. If you feel like contributing, hit the PayPal button in the right sidebar and donate. All money I collect will go to Child’s Play. My goal is to raise $500, but I hope to raise more. If you don’t feel like donating money, then feel free to hit up the Amazon wish list for the Children’s Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. I’ve chosen this hospital because it’s the closest children’s hospital to Illinois that’s participating in Child’s Play.
Something to keep in mind about the wish lists… just because gamers started this charity, doesn’t mean the wish lists are full of only video games. There are toys and books on the lists as well, so if you feel more comfortable donating a toy or book, by all means please do so.
And spread the word! The more people donate, the more things there are for kids to do while in the hospital receiving treatment.
Quick personal note to my family and friends –
If you were planning on getting me anything for Christmas, then consider this my request. Please donate to Child’s Play with a monetary donation or by purchasing a gift from the hospital’s wish list. I already have everything I could need and these kids could use some ‘pick-me-ups’. Thanks.
